Ear congestion solutions?

I woke up last night feeling like my ear is plugged up and it has gotten worse throughout the day today.  I feel like I need to pop it or like there's fluid in there.  I can't really hear out of it-sounds like everything is muffled.  It's only the left side though.  Does anyone have any good ideas that are safe while pregnant for fixing this?  It's pretty annoying and starting to affect my balance (which is already a problem since I"m such a clutz to begin with!)

Re: Ear congestion solutions?

  • I take suddafed (sp?) the behind the counter kind for it.

  • Sudafed. Yes the nasal decongestant. It will help you get rid of the flying on an airplane feeling in your ears!! GL! Just be sure to get the behind the counter pseduophedrine,that's what's safest for mommies to be. ;

  • I have had congestion for the past 3 weeks and off and on I feel like my ears are blocked.  What helps me, because I don't like to take meds, is a neti pot.  You may have some sinus congestion that attributes to the ear feeling.
  • Another non-med solution is equal parts rubbing alcohol &white vinegar.  Put a couple drops in the ear that is bothering you & it may help draw out the fluid.  It always has for me!

  • I've had ear congestion since July, it's a total nightmare. Mine's more from congestion in my sinuses and throat that makes my each echo. I don't want to take sudafed so I've been toughing it out, blowing my nose and clearing my throat a lot. It's really gross but I've been able to tough it out.  I hope you find a remedy that clears yours up!

  • I just had this, went to the doctor, and had a terrible ear infection. I would go have it checked to make sure you don't need antibiotics. I'm more prone to ear infections while pregnant for some reason too. I had three with DS (including one while in labor that caused me to get IV antibiotics!)

  • I had this with DD1 and frankly I couldn't get anything to clear it up until she was a few weeks old and it just went away on its own.  Pregnancy congestion is not pleasant....

  • I wish I had seen the post earlier in my pregnancy! I dealt with ear congestion up until about a month ago and nothing helped!

  • I'm so sorry. I had it in my left ear last week. Mine is due to nasal congestion. What helped me was a warm bath, followed by laying on the floor with my muffled ear pressed against a pillow. The pressure helped and alleviated that nagging feeling and eventually went away. This has happened several times with both pregnancies and is so annoying. Hope yours goes away soon.

  • Best to call your doc. I had to get antibiotics. And I wouldn't take any medicine without asking ur doc. Mine says you shouldn't take the sudafed from behind the counter unless the benefits out way the risks. And only your doc can tell you that.

    You can also try heating olive oil. Just to Luke warm. And put some in ur ear. Lay on the opposite side to let it soak in. Wait 5 mins and put a cotton ball in ur ear and lay on that side with ur head on a heating pad. My mom has been doing it for us since we were little. It helps most of the time.
